In 1999, I started my career as a professional musician on cruise ships. One year in, Stage 4B cancer tried to write my finale.
Six months of chemotherapy. Clean bill of health.
Then, weeks later, I found bumps.
It was back—technically “primary refractory,” one continuous event, not a relapse. But when you’ve just been told you’re free and clear, finding new tumors feels like a death sentence. MUCH worse than the initial diagnosis.
Sixteen months of hell. A stem cell transplant in July 2001. Two months later, still recovering, I watched the towers fall on September 11th. The world was trying to make sense of an impossible loss while I was trying to make sense of my impossible survival.
And then? I went back to the ships.
For 13 more years, I performed across oceans, became Music Director, led orchestras. When you’ve clawed your way back from the edge twice, you don’t play it safe—you go all in.
